DYSTOPIA

by Malik Isasis

Two months ago, on January 28, 2007, the Sunday Herald of Scotland headlined “America ‘Poised to Strike at Iran’s Nuclear Sites’ from Bases in Bulgaria and Romania”. "American forces could be using their two USAF bases in Bulgaria and one at Romania's Black Sea coast to launch an attack on Iran in April," the Bulgarian news agency Novinite said.

On December 21, 2006, the U.S. raided an Iranian Diplomatic office in Northern Iraq, detaining six Iranian diplomats. The Los Angeles Times reported at the time that the raid had followed similar detentions of Iranian diplomats in Baghdad weeks earlier.

Making the Pieces fit

The Global War on Terrorism train is full speed ahead and Bush and the neocons have cut the brake lines. Bush and Co. have strategically crowded the Persian Gulf with ships and personnel so that an ‘incident’ would occur, which would gin up the American people for another campaign of destruction. The Iranians took the bait by capturing 15 British Royal Navy sailors and marines who were in Iranian waters, now Bush and Co. are pushing this square peg into a round hole.

The justification for capturing and disappearing the Iranian diplomats was that the diplomats were really Iranian Revolutionary Guard and were responsible for the smuggling weapons and killing American troops. This charge by the U.S. was also strategic, in that it would be a building block for further charges if and when an ‘incident’ was to occur in the crowded Persian Gulf.

"One is to try and settle this by way of peaceful, calm negotiation, get our people back as quickly as possible ... The other is to make it clear that if that's not possible, then we have to take increasingly tougher decisions," Blair declared.

The Iranian-U.K.-U.S. standoff could end rather anti-climatically if the Iranian diplomats were released from U.S. custody, but that’s not in the script is it? The five disappeared Iranian diplomats’ lives means absolutely nothing to the U.K. and U.S. but somewhere in Iran, they have family too who are grieving their disappearance.

The Creative Solution for a Non-Compliant Iran

Bush’s impatience with Iran’s non-compliance to the United Nations Security Council’s Resolution [Resolution 1696] which demands Iran suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development, and gave it one month to do so or face the possibility of economic and diplomatic sanctions to give effect to its decision, has run out. Bush and Co. characteristically has not tried to hide their attempt to provoke the Iranians into a fight by using the troops he loves so much, as live bait.

The report from the Sunday Herald of Scotland stated, “Sofia's (capital of Bulgaria) news of advanced war preparations along the Black Sea is backed up by some chilling details. One is the setting up of new refueling places for US Stealth bombers, which would spearhead an attack on Iran. "The USAF's positioning of vital refuelling facilities for its B-2 bombers in unusual places, including Bulgaria, falls within the perspective of such an attack." Novinite named Colonel Sam Gardiner, "a US secret service officer stationed in Bulgaria", as the source of this revelation.”

Reuters reported on March 17, 2007, “The U.S. Army said on Friday it was sending some 2,600 soldiers to Iraq earlier than planned, raising the number of extra U.S. troops being deployed in a new effort to stabilize the country to nearly 30,000.”

The report by the Sunday Herald of Scotland reported back on January 28, 2007, “Before the end of March, 3000 US military personnel are scheduled to arrive "on a rotating basis" at America's Bulgarian bases. Under the US-Bulgarian military co-operation accord, signed in April, 2006, an airbase at Bezmer, a second airfield at Graf Ignitievo and a shooting range at Novo Selo were leased to America. Significantly, last year's bases negotiations had at one point run into difficulties due to Sofia's demand "for advance warning if Washington intends to use Bulgarian soil for attacks against other nations, particularly Iran".

March has come and gone and the Army has activated 2,600 more personnel. This looks strangely like a build up for a bombing campaign against Iran.

The Moving Train of Global War on Terrorism

The phrase Global War on Terrorism is intentionally broad and ubiquitous as to justify the colonization, and destruction of human life and culture, but most importantly, so those who are responsible are not held accountable for their action.

Once the gears of war are set in motion, the Democratic Party will shut up and salute and the American people will pull out the big Styrofoam #1 hand and cheer on the Red, White and Blue.

Heroes and Hypocrites: Black Caucus Shattered on Iraq

by Bruce Dixon

"National Democratic party leaders hope to conduct the same "hopeful", nonspecific and vaguely oppositional national campaign as in 2006, reaping antiwar Democratic votes for pro-war Democratic candidates"

George Bush predicted more than a year ago that no matter who won the 2006 mid-term election, withdrawal from Iraq will be the next president's problem, not his. Few Bush predictions on Iraq have come true. But last week Congressional Democrats made a prophet out of the Republican president.

From all the gloating, backslapping and high-fiving in the House of Representatives last Friday afternoon, a casual viewer might imagine Democrats had pulled off some decisive stroke against the Bush regime's unjust and illegal war on Iraq. In fact, they did not
