IMMIGRANTS ARE US
by MALIK ISASIS
I am currently working on a documentary with the non-profit organization Hate Free Zone here in Seattle on what they refer to as the broken immigration system. Hate Free Zone has sponsored a series of public hearings “highlighting the real cost to our communities of our broken immigration system.”
During this political season, both legal and illegal immigrants have been the scapegoats for politicians across both political spectra. As the United States’ population has crossed the threshold of 300 million, there must be more creativity than building yet another wall to address the immigration system, which both liberals and conservatives agree is broken.
I went to film one of the public hearings on October 18, 2006. The hearing consisted of legal immigrants telling stories of mistreatment by Homeland Security, FBI, detention centers, and the courts. I am currently transcribing the testimony by the immigrants and will be sharing their stories with you.
There will be a series of stories from the immigrants themselves, telling the stories in their own voices. Their identities will be redacted for protection.
